Education Program

OperaEncounter is Long Beach Opera's innovative education and outreach initiative which seeks not only to develop local students’ appreciation and understanding of the arts, but also to create opportunities for personal and community growth.

OperaEncounter sparks the students’ interests about the world of opera and engages them in exploring issues of tolerance, racism, ethics, social responsibility, and personal strength. Students will emerge as well rounded members in the community and gain an appreciation for the arts.

OperaEncounter currently includes two programs: OperaAccess and Opera@School. Since OperaEncounter’s inception in 2007, over 12,000 students have participated from local districts, especially in the inner-city area of downtown of Long Beach.

Opera@School

Opera@School Students with Gerda SeiffertLBO offers junior high students a live opera performance of The Diary of Anne Frank composed by Grigori Frid along with an interactive workshop introducing students to opera and a discussion with a Holocaust survivor. Teachers are provided with a resource packet, which includes additional lesson plans and activities to enhance the learning experience for students.

Opera@School is recognized by the LA County Commission for the Arts for meeting the CA Education Standards for 8th graders concurrently in all subjects such as visual and performing arts, language arts, history, and social science.  Click here to see our listing with detailed info about the program, including its alignment with California content standards.

Opera Access

Opera Access invites high schools to attend the final dress rehearsal of an LBO production. Students and faculty are eligible for free admission to an exclusive sneak preview performance before opening night.

HELP BRING OPERA AND THE ARTS INTO SCHOOLS!

“Live on- campus opera performances are so  rare and to have a workshop prior is a  luxury. The opera was engaging and it was  great for the students to experience what an  opera is like. It was a different and creative  way to teach about the life of Anne Frank.”      (Teacher, Jefferson Leadership Academy)

"I thank LBO for this once in a lifetime experience. In fact, this was my first opera experience and LBO made it worth remembering!"                                                    (Student, Tincher Prep)
