OperaEncounter is Long Beach Opera's suite of innovative education and outreach programs designed to develop local students’ appreciation and understanding of the arts and to create opportunities for personal and community growth. OperaEncounter sparks students’ interest in the world of opera and engages them to explore issues of tolerance, racism, ethics, social responsibility, and personal strength. Students will emerge from these programs as well-rounded members in the community and gain a deeper appreciation for the arts.
OperaEncounter currently includes three programs: LBOMG! (for college students), OperaAccess (for high school and college students) and [email protected] (for elementary, middle school and high school students). Since OperaEncounter’s inception in 2007, over 28,000 students have participated from local districts, especially in the inner-city areas of Long Beach and greater Los Angeles.

LBO offers junior high and high school students a live opera performance of The Diary of Anne Frank by Grigori Frid, along with an interactive workshop introducing students to opera and a powerful discussion with an actual Holocaust survivor (subject to availability). Teachers are provided with a resource packet that includes additional lesson plans and activities to enhance the learning experience for students.
LBO offers elementary students grades K–2 a live opera performance of Monkey See, Monkey Do by Robert Xavier Rodríguez, a delightful operatic setting of a familiar Mexican folk tale. Perfect for both English-speaking and bilingual audiences, Monkey See, Monkey Do provides an immersive experience in Hispanic music and culture while teaching valuable lessons about cooperation and problem-solving.
LBO offers elementary school students grades 2–5 a live opera performance of The Playground King by Sara Squire. The Playground King uses familiar arias and ensembles from opera and operetta to teach children valuable lessons about problem-solving, cooperation and sharing, and confronting bullying behavior from other students. This “outside-the-box” production is performed outdoors on the school’s playground equipment!
[email protected] programs are recognized by the LA County Commission for the Arts for meeting the CA Education Standards in subjects including visual and performing arts, language arts, history, and social science. HELP BRING OPERA AND THE ARTS INTO SCHOOLS!
“Live, on-campus opera performances are so rare and to have a workshop prior is a luxury. The opera was engaging and it was great for the students to experience what an opera is like. It was a different and creative way to teach about the life of Anne Frank.” (Teacher, Jefferson Leadership Academy)
“I thank LBO for this once in a lifetime experience. In fact, this was my first opera experience and LBO made it worth remembering!” (Student, Tincher Preparatory School)
