Abdiel Gonzalez Bio

Puerto Rican baritone Abdiel González has earned acclaim for his “rich, lush baritone” and for having a “superb voice, which commanded the stage.” Equally at home in opera, concert repertoire, and studio recording, he has built a distinguished and versatile career spanning major symphonic collaborations, operatic performances, and film soundtracks.

Recent engagements include a return to Taiwan as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, performances as the Teacher in Kurt Weill’sDer Jasager with Kaleidoscope at the Thomas Mann House, and appearances as bass soloist in Händel’s Messiah and Ariel Ramírez’sNavidad Nuestra with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He can also be heard as the alien vocal soloist in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Additional notable collaborations include recording the role of Thermus in Harrison’s Young Caesar with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and performing the Traveler in Britten’s Curlew River with Jacaranda as part of the Britten100/LA celebration. Mr. González made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as soloist in Stravinsky’s Renard under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen.

His operatic repertoire encompasses a wide range of leading baritone roles, including Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette, Athanaël inThaïs, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Morales in Carmen, Pandolfe inCendrillon, Ko-Ko in The Mikado, the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, and Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. He also performed the role of Shrike in the West Coast premiere of Miss Lonelyhearts. Deeply devoted to the zarzuela tradition, Mr. González has appeared in leading roles in Luis Alonso,Goyescas, and El barberillo de Lavapiés.

On the concert stage, Mr. González has appeared as soloist in Händel’s Messiah, Orff’sCarmina Burana, Fauré’s Requiem, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, Haydn’s Creation, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Minor, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and St. John Passion, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols and Five Mystical Songs, Liszt’s Via Crucis, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, and Britten’s War Requiem.

A sought-after recording artist, Mr. González sang and recorded the role of Armand Fleury in the world premiere of Shostakovich’s newly discovered unfinished opera Orango with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He also performed the baritone solos in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Veracruz, Mexico, with the Orquesta de Boca del Río under the direction of Jorge Mester for the dedication of a new state-of-the-art performance center.

Beyond the concert hall and opera stage, Mr. González’s voice can be heard on the soundtracks of more than 100 films and television productions, including Family Guy, Modern Family, The Book of Boba Fett, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Frozen, Encanto, Coco, Avatar: The Way of Water, Wicked, Hoppers and many others.
