Ipsa Dixit Story

Prepare to embark on a captivating journey through the mind-bending world of Kate Soper's IPSA DIXIT. Premiered in New York in December 2016 and a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in Music, this avant-garde gem is not your typical opera. Dubbed a "philosophy-opera" by The New Yorker, it's set to make its dazzling return in a brand-new production at the Art Theatre in Long Beach during the first two weekends of June.

IPSA DIXIT is an artistic revelation, a profound exploration of the intricate dance between ideas, expression, and language. Composed over six years, it's a bold fusion of sound and thought, delivered in six striking movements that weave seamlessly into a mesmerizing ninety-minute whole. Soper boldly asks, "How can music unveil the very essence of being a thinker, a language-wielder, with all the glorious contradictions and limitations language itself brings?" To answer, she employs her own words alongside excerpts from luminaries like Aristotle, Plato, and Freud, pushing the boundaries of artistic meaning.
