THE STORY
Based on the classic 1898 novella, The Turn of the Screw is one of the most unsettling works in the operatic repertoire. The story follows a governess who arrives at a remote country estate to care for two children. Britten’s taut score, structured around a recurring twelve-note theme, and Myfanwy Piper’s haunting libretto capture her slow descent into madness as she begins to sense the presence of malevolent spirits.
